The concepts emerging from discourses on political economy - the invisible hand (Adam Smith 1776), the spectre of communism (Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels 1848), the (new) spirit of capitalism (Max Weber 1904 / Luc Boltanski, Ève Chiapello 1999) come to us as ghostly beings in addition to explanatory models that illustrate social phenomena. Elements of this installation interpret the logic of Capitalism that leads to alienated world relations. It unfolds a space of thought that places metaphorical processes, linguistic and visual characters as aesthetic pictorial formulas alongside theoretical figures of thought.

The works „Between what I say and keep for myself“ and „Between what I keep and dream for myself“ form a metaphor of the concept of alienation. The broken surface structure corresponds figuratively with the linguistic metaphor of broken unity as a synonym of the state of alienation. The assemblage „To the ear of my ear“ refers to a personal alienation experience as the individual sense of isolation and reflects the tendency of inner termination in a system of exploitation. As a reference to Max Weber‘s spirit of capitalism, the collage „Cup II“ forms a node in the relationship structure of the installation. Both graphics allude to the culturally differentiated attitude towards the value of things that have their roots in animist cultures. As pictorial metaphors, they stage the soulfulness of things in the context of alienation as a utopian counter-design that evokes an empathetic mode of relationship in the sense of resonance. Against the background of Latour‘s concept of quasi-objects, which understands things as equivalent to persons as „actants“, human action is always interwoven with things.

The series „A Specter is Haunting the Earth“ was created by a chromatographic process. In terms of system theory, the physical process acts as a model for man-made or natural systems. The amorphous forms, which can be associated as auratic beings and their serial character, create an analogy for the unreal accumulation processes of the capital flows, which are reduced to an order by means of abstract numerical codes much like in financial accounting.

The display design of the installation is inspired by advertising and sales displays: advertising brochure holders and the functional negative form of a hanging hole, practical as part of a product’s packaging in contemporary mass production, reflect value dimensions in a world shaped by capitalistic logic.
