Escaping Capitalist Visions

Generally speaking, vignetting and light falloff in photography are undesirable effects as they lead to a steady darkening from the image center to the edges. The actual work ’Escaping Capitalist Visions’ precedes such a corrective process. The original image was captured in Glasgow, whilst visiting a museum which focuses on the historical and economic legacy of a society which once profited from colonialism, and the attendant exploitation of human and material resources. I have manipulated the image counter-intuitively to the prevailing photographic practices, by not removing the vignette but by instead omitting the text information including the slightly controversial (if somewhat clichéd) slogan: ’Capitalist visions. Money makes the world go round’. The doctored image ’Escaping Capitalist Visions’ contains no ideological information anymore. It is understood as an aesthetic antithesis to the conscious and unconscious disinformation and manipulation inherent within a society that values human life only in terms of production and profit. As a metaphorical visualisation of anti-propaganda ’Escaping Capitalist Visions’ reflects the behaviour of inner refusal and conflict which occurs within countless employees of the ´productive´ economy. The attitude of silent mental refusal can be seen as an intuitive resistance. ’Escaping Capitalist Visions’ reflects this pattern of isolation as a visually bright image viewed through closed eyes. This subtle gesture of resistance challenges the overwhelming and manipulative ideologies of conformity, thereby opening up realms of possibility to counteract the pernicious effects of manipulation.

Im Allgemeinen sind in der Fotografie Vignettierung und Randlichtabfall ungewollte Effekte da sie zu einer stetigen Verdunkelung des Bildes zu den Bildecken hin führen. Der eigentlichen Arbeit Escaping Capitalist Visions geht eine solche Aufnahme voraus. Die Aufnahme entstand bei einem Museumsbesuch zur Stadtgeschichte Glasgows und der historischen und wirtschaftlichen Praxis einer Gesellschaft, welche anfangs vor allem durch die Kolonialisierung und damit einhergegangene Ausbeutung humaner und materieller Ressourcen Profite generieren und somit wachsen konnte: „capitalist visions. money makes the world go round.“ Ich habe die Aufnahme manipuliert und entgegen der herrschenden Bildpraxis nicht die Vignette sondern alle sonstigen Bildinformation inklusive des kontroversen Slogans entfernt. Das manipulierte Bild Escaping Capitalist Visions enthält keine ideologische Information mehr. Es versteht sich als ästhetisches Gegenbild zur bewussten und unbewussten Desinformation und Manipulation einer propagierten Leistungsgesellschaft der Überproduktion. Als metaphorisch verbildlichte Antipropaganda spiegelt Escaping Capitalist Visions das Verhalten der ‚inneren Kündigung’ im Sinne einer Distanzierung oder gar Verweigerung wieder, von der mittlerweile zahllose Beschäftigte betroffen sind. Die Haltung der stillen, mentalen Verweigerung engagierter Leistung liest sich als intuitiver Widerstand. Escaping Capitalist Visions reflektiert dieses Verhaltensmuster der Isolation als das visuelle Bild durch geschlossene Augen (bei Helligkeit). Diese subtile Geste des Widerstandes hinterfragt die vereinnahmenden und manipulierenden Botschaften der zunehmenden Konzepte der Identifizierung die Ideologien schaffen und eröffnet einen Möglichkeitsraum um der stetigen Manipulation entgegenzuwirken.
